Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder that involves strong urges to pull one's own hair out. This can be hair on one's head, eyelashes, eyebrows or other body hairs.
Trichotillomania can start as early as age 1 and continue into adolescence. The peak age when Trichotillomania occurs is 9 to 13 years Trichotillomania used to be seen to be a rear condition but Doctors now have a better understanding of the condition and see more incidents of the condition. It is now thought to affect about 3.4% of females and 1.5% of males.
It can occur due to stress or depression. Trichotillomania sufferers feel a moment of relief from their worries after pulling out their hair but this feeling only last a short time. This becomes a habit and the longer this goes on, the harder it can be to resist the urge. For help, seek the help of a Therapist.
