Alopecia areata (AA) is a condition in which hair is lost from some or all areas of the body, usually from the scalp. Sometimes Alopecia can affect other parts of the body such as beards, chest hair, pubic hair and even eye lashes and eye brows.

Typical first symptoms of Alopecia areata are small bald patches. The underlying skin is unscarred and looks superficially normal.

The disease may also go into remission for a time, or may be permanent. It is common in children. The youngest client we have had at HairWeavon was  4 years old.

Alopecia areata can affect both men and women.

The area of hair loss may tingle or be painful.

The hair tends to fall out over a short period of time, with the loss commonly occurring more on one side of the scalp than the other.

Alopecia is not contagious. It occurs more frequently in people who have affected family members, suggesting heredity may be a factor. Strong evidence of genetic association with increased risk for Alopecia areata was found by studying families with two or more affected members.

In addition, it is slightly more likely to occur in people who have relatives with autoimmune diseases.

The condition is thought to be an autoimmune disorder in which the body attacks its own hair follicles and suppresses or stops hair growth.

Just thought this might be of interest to our male hair loss clients, Formula 1 presenter Eddie Jordan suffers from alopecia and is a Wig wearer.

His alopecia is a result of a racing accident sustained during his youth.

Though EJ’s baldness is not very well known, he makes no secret of it. Back in 2009 he told the Metro, “When I was young, I had a very serious accident: I broke both legs and damaged a nerve. I have alopecia and I got the right people to look after me. I’ve no problem with talking about that.”

Alopecia Areata is a hair loss condition that can affect both men and women. The exact causes of the condition are not known but it is widely thought to be brought about by stress, and by traumatic experiences and shocks, such as the accident suffered by Eddie Jordan.

I brought my weave hair extensions to a local salon in Dublin. The hair dresser started by putting lines of small tight plats in my hair (as you can see in the picture). Then she started to sow the 100% real hair extensions with a needle and thread into the plats. I was nervous going in that the plats might be sore but they were fine.

The final result was amazing. I was conscience that you might be able to see the plats or even the extensions, but you can’t, and the extensions blend really well with my own hair. If you are thinking of getting a weave I would strongly recommend you do so. Clip in hair extensions are really handy when you want longer or fuller hair, but if you are looking for a longer lasting result then getting a weave is the way to go!

An illness like cancer has many aspects – practical, emotional, spiritual. In her book, Cathy McCarthy blends together all of these strands. Not The Year You Had Planned is a positive self-help book for a time in one's life that was not expected or planned and provides as much information as possible to help navigate through the journey with cancer. It is empowering to hear about brave women fighting the cancer battle and winning. I recently found out that Aine Lawlor who is a RTE Radio presenter is one such brave woman. 50 year old Aine is a very loved voice on Rte Radio 1 and mother of 4. Aine underwent 9 gruelling months of treatments that included chemotherapy, radiotherapy and a mastectomy.

Aine's mother died of breast cancer at the age of 47 so she always feared that it would get her. She went to see her GP when she noticed puckering of skin on her breast and thankfully it was caught early. 7 months after her diagnosis, She spoke openly about her fight with cancer, chemotherapy, wearing a wig and losing much of her breast.

We are happy to learn that Aine is doing well and is back doing what she loves on the Morning Ireland on RTE radio 1.

One of the most traumatic part of cancer diagnosis can be hair loss. Most women don’t realize how important their hair is to them until it is lost. Most cancer sufferers will lose their hair approximately 10 days after treatment begins. This can make you feel vulnerable and exposed. Something that you have been dealing with privately with your friends and family is now being announced to the world.

A wig that is practically identical to your own hair, in colour and style, can help you look and feel like yourself during this time.

Here are some tips to help with getting a wig

1. Which to choose - Synthetic or human hair?  For long hair, a real hair wig will definitely look better. Synthetic wigs can look good for a month or so but will start to fray, tangle and look artificial.

2. Custom-made wig:  If you would prefer to have a wig that closely resembles your own hair, getting a custom made one is best. It is worth bearing in mind that the service can take up to 6 weeks.

3. Cost: In Ireland, Synthetic wigs can range from €300 and up. Real hair wigs can cost €600 and up.

4. Funding: In Ireland, Full Medical card holders are eligible for a wig grant. Some insurance companies will also cover the cost of your wig.

5. Ask for a monofilament wig cap as it is comfortable to wear, breathable and the crown of the wig resembles your own scalp.

6. Styling: Synthetic wigs usually do not require styling.  Having a wig made from real hair means it can be styled as you would normally style your hair. Hair dryers, strengtheners, curling tongs etc can all be used on human hair wigs.

7. Heat: Synthetic wigs are susceptible to melting. Be careful with steaming food or when opening the oven as the sudden heat can cause melting.

8. Durability: Synthetic wigs are not very durable. They’ll last a few months and then require replacing. A real hair wigs will last years if well looked after.

9. Activities:  If you are an active person i.e. enjoy running, gyming, swimming etc, You may consider a lace wig - This is semi permanently fitted to the scalp with double sided wig tape or liquid bond.

10. Fit: Get a wig that is made to fit. Usually there is a strap in the inside of the cap for added security. If you have some hair, a comb can be added to hook into it also.

After undergoing a mastectomy (having both of her breasts removed), Christina Applegate is in the midst of launching a foundation for women at high-risk for breast cancer who cannot afford MRI treatment.

Jaclyn Smith, the ex-model and Charlie’s Angels actress, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002. After her successful lumpectomy and radiation, she is now an activist for recognizing breast cancer risk factors.

Kylie Minogue, the Australian pop star, almost missed her chance to defeat breast cancer because of an original misdiagnosis. She now encourages women to trust their instinct, and know to get a second opinion if you have a feeling that something may be wrong.

Robin Roberts is a Good Morning America anchor who detected her breast cancer doing a breast self-exam – she now works to spread the word of the importance of regularly examining your own breasts to look for any abnormal lumps. She credits her early detection for allowing her to become cancer free.

Here are the steps to achieve this laid back, glamorous look:

Joanna Rowsell is a 23-year-old World Cup gold medalist cyclist and a member of Great Britain’s cycling team headed to the London 2012 Olympics.  She is also a long time sufferer of alopecia areata.

I have always been an active supporter of cancer awareness and support groups – but even I was initially a little shocked when I heard about the nationwide fundraiser, “Dip in the Nip,” taking place in Ireland on Sunday, June 24^th. 

This Sunday, hundreds of women will strip down and run naked into the Atlantic Ocean to raise money for the fight against Cancer – seems crazy at first, but how cool! Skinny-dipping for a cause. I love it.

The event will take place in Sligo, Clare, Cork and East Coast; all of the money raised will go toward cancer research, education, and services.

I started looking into the event more, and found some truly amazing stories.

For example, Tara Sheridan from Glanmire has beaten cancer four times. Four times! That alone is an incredible feat.  And she hasn’t let it keep her down – she has opened a holistic therapy practice and has been an active and adamant supporter of cancer services and research.

She has participated in the Dip in the Nip since 2009; she said that at first she “was petrified, there were 180 other women.  But once it was time to run into the water, it felt liberating.  It was so much fun and you get a feeling of euphoria.”

And in addition to the great feeling you get during the event, the cause is even more important.  Tara added that, “It is of the utmost importance that fundraising is continued for services and research.  When I was diagnosed in 1995 they didn’t have this treatment but it was used then in 1998.”

Dip in the Nip is such a great way for all of us to join the fight, aid cancer research, and do our part for the huge community of cancer sufferers and survivors.

She went on to explain that she suffers from Alopecia, she described it as been allergic to her hair. She explained that she first developed alopecia when she was 10 in the form of a big bald spot on the side of her head. Then she had no hair on the top of her head and long hair on the back which she described as 'a glorified mullet'.Then all the hair fell out. What to do:

1. Fill up your sink with look warm water
2. Add some of the shampoo to the water and make a ladder with the solution
3. Then soak your already brushed hair piece into the solution
4. Allow it to soak for 20-30mins and then lift it from the solution
5. To rinse the shampoo from the hair, fill your sink with look warm water again and this time deep your hair piece into the water
6. Air dry your hair piece or place it in your hot press for speed dry
7. Once dry, you will notice how soft your hair piece becomes
8. Add a small amount of serum to the hair piece
