Miss America contender talks Alopecia Areata Hair Loss

I was recently watching the Doctors TV show and the guest was the beautiful 22 year old Kayla Martell. Kayla is Miss Delaway and a contender in the Miss America contest. Kayla is a beauty queen with a difference, she suffers from Alopecia Aretha. At the start of the show she took off her wig to reveal her bald head. It was a complete surprise to see that she was wearing a wig.

She went on to explain that she suffers from Alopecia, she described it as been allergic to her hair. She explained that she first developed alopecia when she was 10 in the form of a big bald spot on the side of her head. Then she had no hair on the top of her head and long hair on the back which she described as ‘a glorified mullet’.Then all the hair fell out. She explains that her Alopecia Aretha condition is constantly changing. It is cyclical but that there was no way of predicting when her hair will grow or fall out again.

She said she has tried several medications, she saw some results initially with a medication called cortisone injections but when she stopped using the medication, her hair fell out again. She decided that the medications were not for her and a life of medication wasn’t one she wanted to commit to for the rest of her life. The doctor on the show further echoed that many medications for Alopecia Aretha dont work.

It is estimated that 5 million people in America suffer from Alopecia. We will continue our research to find you data of how many people are affected by alopecia in ireland. If you have any details on this, please feel free to comment below.
