Mastering the Hair Topper Blend with Video Explanations

Mastering the Topper Blend

Blending your Hair Topper – You are thrilled that your new hair topper has just arrived!  You rip open the box and situate it atop your head.  And then what?

Whether you are a new or experienced hair topper wearer, it takes practice blending each and every piece.  This makes toppers unique and different from wigs in that they integrate with your own natural hair, much like traditional hair extensions.

Mastering the seamless blend comes down to 3 main considerations: colour, cut and styling!

In the video below, Laura shows us how to blend hair toppers for a natural and seamless look.

Colour

Blending your hair topper – There’s a reason hair toppers come in such a wide variety of colours!  While it is not necessary to achieve an exact colour match in order to blend, a “close enough” match is something you should be looking for.  It’s best to consult with the store when it comes to selecting the right colour, especially if you are buying a topper online where it can be tricky to get a true representation of the colour on your screen.

Reading colour descriptions to gather some key information is also helpful.

  • Is the shade cool, neutral, or warm toned?
  • Is the colour dimensional (i.e. more than 1 colour blended together)?
  • Is there a description in terms of the level (i.e. lightness or darkness of the hair)?

Ask your stylist to describe the colour, level and tone of your natural hair.  If you are looking to change up your look by purchasing a topper with a highlighted colour, look for a base and root colour that is the closest match to your own hair.

In general, the lighter the density of the topper you are buying, the closer the colour match should be as more of your natural hair will show through the hair on the topper.  Keep in mind that you cannot change the colour of synthetic hair.  Human hair toppers can usually be coloured darker, but generally, you ought not to make they lighter.  Human hair that has been coloured can be expected to fade/oxidize over time, so you will need to refresh the colour every so often.

Cut

Blending your hair topper – Always, always, always plan to have your topper cut in so that you are able to blend with your natural hair.  It’s best to see an experienced stylist for best results.  Look for a topper that is slightly longer than your natural hair so that everything can be trimmed together.  Wear your topper around the house for a while before seeing your stylist so that you can get a sense of how much length you want to remove, and to see if any thinning or shaping is required.  Ask your stylist to cut and thin gradually so that you get exactly the look you are hoping for without removing too much length or density.

Styling

Blendign your hair topper – Styling options will depend on the types of fibres you’re purchasing.  Traditional synthetic fibres retain their shape when washed and don’t style by heat.  This means if the piece comes straight, it will stay straight.  If it comes wavy, it will stay wavy.  You can style by heat the Heat friendly synthetic toppers (to a maximum temperature per manufacturer’s guidelines).  Human hair has the most flexible options since you can use hot tools and heatless styling.

It is a good idea to plan ahead how you will want to wear your natural hair and topper.  This will help you choose the right type of fibre for you.  If you generally wear your hair straight, find a topper that is straight or can be straightened.  If you have curly or wavy hair, you will want to look for a curl or wave pattern that resembles your own. Additionally, ask your stylist what tools you can use to achieve a similar pattern on your topper.

Finishing Touches for Blending your Hair Topper

Blending your hair topper – Once you have found the right colour, had your topper cut in, and styled both your topper and natural hair, you will gently place your topper on top of your head.  Comb some of your natural hair forward at the hairline for blending (unless you have a lace front).  Open the clips and secure them to your hair.  Using a wide tooth comb, gently blend your hair and the topper hair together.  Brush the hairs you pulled out in the front up and into the front of the topper, or have your stylist add a fringe for even greater ease of blending your hair topper and your hair!
