How To Make Your Wig Last Longer

How To Make Your Wig Last Longer

Wigs are an investment, they’re the most expensive accessory anyone could have. When you are spending a significant amount of money on a product, you want it to stand the test of time. When you care for your wig properly, your hair will last longer, and you’ll always look gorgeous.

1. Sleeping In Your Wig

Hair can easily get knotted, and broken. Tension at the cap can damage the wig. The best option for your scalp is to sleep with nothing on your scalp to let it breathe. This can be difficult when you are experiencing hair loss for the first time. Instead, try to wear a turban or headscarf while sleeping. These are softer, and are way more comfortable to sleep in.

If you do chose to sleep in your wig, do bear in mind that it will cut the life span in half. In saying that, we know many women feel more confident, and feminine while keeping their wig on.

So if you’re going to wear your wig in bed a silk pillowcase is a must! We particularly love the Mulberry Silk Pillowcase by Ionic Pillowcase. The silk pillowcase will keep your hair silky smooth, reduce knotting and tangling, prolonging the life of your wig.

2. Alternate Your Wigs

If you prefer wearing synthetic wigs, you’ll know they have a shorter life span, and only last around 3-5 months. We would suggest alternating between two wigs, one might be for around the house and going to the gym etc. The other could be your ‘good’ wig for special occasions and outings.

PS. It’s always handy to have a ‘back up’ wig in case of emergencies

3. Wash Your Wig Less Regularly Than You Think

When people wash their bio hair, they’ll do so ever day or second day. If you did this with a wig, it would cut its life in half. Wigs go bald too! When you wash a wig hair will fall out of the cap. We recommend you wash your wig every 1-2 weeks is plenty.

4. Brush With Care

When detangling your wig, brush with care! Use a wig brush with spaced out bristles. When you brush your wig properly, you’ll lose less hair which makes your wig last longer.

TOP TIP : For Synthetic wigs, use a wide tooth comb like the one below! Use this to comb through hair when wet, to avoid losing hairs from the wig.

5. Wash Your Wig PROPERLY

It’s important to treat your wig delicately while washing it. Comb out any knots before washing, and use the recommended shampoos and care products for your hair type. Watch our video below for instructions!

6. Use a wig stand

At night time, or days you don’t use your wig, display it on a wig stand. This will keep your wig in shape, and is great for air drying. The wig stands are available for short/medium and long hair. The Polystyrene Wig Head is also great for storing your wig and for washing! Particularly when washing a human hair wig, we recommend you pin the wig to the poly head, throughout the washing process. See video above for more info!

7. Use Less Heat on your Hair!

When it comes to heat, less is more, as using heating tools like straighteners and curlers, will reduce the life span of your wig. To achieve a wavy or curly look, try the Bendy Rollers after washing your hair. This will create curls in the healthiest way possible for your hair.
