You’ve just made your very first topper purchase- CONGRATULATIONS!  Chances are, you’ve done your homework to make sure the piece you bought is just right for you.

Now it’s time to check out some helpful extras that you will need for styling and maintaining your topper!

A canvas block or mannequin head will make styling your topper much simpler.  As a bonus, you can also lay your topper on the block or mannequin between wears to help maintain the integrity of the cap.  You will also need something that holds your block or mannequin head securely to your work surface.  A clamp such as this one or a tripod will serve as a mount for your canvas block so that it does not tip over when you’re styling your piece.  While you can technically style your topper on your head, this can sometimes lead to undue pulling from the clips attaching to your natural hair.  The advantage of styling the topper off of your head is the ease with which you can style the hair in the back!

T-pins are used to affix your topper to your mannequin head or canvas block while styling.  T-pins are a T-shaped, sharp ended needle.  They are simple to use and easy to remove when you’re done.  Gently push the sharp end of the T-pin through the edge of your topper cap and into your canvas block.  You may need to secure it in 3 to 4 places along the edge of the rim to secure it in place for styling. Avoid putting the pins through the parting area and lace front on your topper as these tend to be a bit more delicate and can damage the material. 

A wide tooth comb is needed both for synthetic and human hair to prevent damage by detangling gently.  Use your wide tooth comb to tackle tangles starting at the ends, section by section, and slowly working your way up toward the mid lengths then closer to the roots.  This is a great way to smooth the hair before paddle brushing (human hair only!)  With synthetic fibres, keep a wide tooth comb in your purse and gently comb a few times a day to keep your fibres tangle-free.  When washing your topper, you can use your wide tooth comb to distribute conditioner through the mid lengths and the ends.  Be sure not to get conditioner near the roots as this can cause the hand tied knots to loosen!

A drying stand  allows good air flow to ensure that your topper is completely dry after washing.  It is equally important for the hair and the inside and outside of the cap to dry completely before wearing.  Both synthetic and human hair fibres are more delicate when wet, so it is important to handle the hair carefully after washing.  Your cap should sit properly on the drying stand so that it dries in its intended shape, free from creases or folds.  You’ll want to pay special attention to your lace front which should sit in a way that it is not rolled under or otherwise misshapen in any way.  The height of your stand should be suitable for the length of your topper.  Long hair will need a taller stand such as this one and this one is meant for toppers with shorter hair.

High quality shampoo, conditioner, and styling products will help to prolong the life of your hair topper.  Using products that are specifically designed for alternative hair (i.e. wigs and toppers) is recommended.  For synthetic fibres, consider the Synthetic Wig Shampoo Care Set by Ellen Wille available here or the Synthetic and Heat Friendly Hair Care Kit by Jon Renau available here.
